History of New Glasgow Lobster Suppers

June 24, 1958 - The first lobster dinner on PEI was served as a fundraiser for the New Glasgow and District Junior Farmers Organization. They bought a building and hauled it from a neighboring community in Covehead. The first customers had to wait in their car as temporary steps were constructed for them to enter the building. Inside, the members of the organization brought in food and served it in a very "country" atmosphere. The bare studs of the walls were showing, the tables were plywood or doors which were laid flat on saw horses and the seats were long benches. The cost of the dinner was $ 1.50.

1963 - The Junior Farmers begin serving the lobster supper once a week.

1970 - The demand for a lobster dinner is so great the organization is now serving seven days a week, from June to September.

1972 - Twelve of the founding Junior Farmers purchase the ownership and it is no longer a fundraiser, it is now a business in itself.

1973 - The building was enlarged to accommodate the large crowds that were gathering with seating for 400.

1975 - The first inland lobster pound was established using 10 wooden tanks. The following year were replaced with 21 fiberglass tanks. Being inland and lobsters requiring salt water, special accommodations had to be made, water would be hauled from the nearby harbour and held in an underground tank that was refrigerated, filtered and circulated through the fiberglass tanks. A cultural display room was also added to educate diners on lobsters.

1979 - Our busiest day in history when we served 1470 people from 4:00 - 9:30pm. During this week the average crowds were 1250 daily!!

1980 - Eight of the owners were wanting out of the business, the remaining four original Junior Farmer members, Jean and Sterling MacRae and William and Thelma Nicholson decided to buy their shares. They are still the owners today.

1983 - The lower level dining room was added to seat an additional 60 seats.

1989 - The lower level dining room was expanded to include the view of the river Clyde and now seats 175. A new lobster pound was also added and expanded to now hold 20,000 pounds of live lobster.

1997 - We are honored with the provincial tourism association's Operator of the Year award at their annual awards banquet.

1998 - The New Glasgow Lobster Suppers celebrates 40 years in business.

1999 - The Great Canadian Food Show films a feature segment to be aired on February 27, 2000 on CBC at 12:30pm.

2003 - New Glasgow, PEI is recognized by HarrowSmith Country Magazine as one of the ten prettiest little towns in Canada.
